What prevents me from being baptized?"And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing.But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he passed through he preached the gospel to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.

And seeing signs and great miracles performed, he was amazed.Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John,who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit,for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money,saying, "Give me this power also, so that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit." And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. But Peter said to him, "May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money!You have neither part nor lot in this matter, for your heart is not right before God.Repent, therefore, of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, if possible, the intent of your heart may be forgiven you.For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity."And Simon answered, "Pray for me to the Lord, that nothing of what you have said may come upon me."Now when they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel to many villages of the Samaritans.Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, "Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." This is a desert place.And he rose and went. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worshipand was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah.And the Spirit said to Philip, "Go over and join this chariot."Devout men buried Stephen and made great lamentation over him.So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, "Do you understand what you are reading?"And he said, "How can I, unless someone guides me?" And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this: "Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he opens not his mouth. In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth." But Saul was ravaging the church, and entering house after house, he dragged off men and women and committed them to prison.Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word.Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed to them the Christ.And the crowds with one accord paid attention to what was being said by Philip when they heard him and saw the signs that he did.For unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who had them, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed.So there was much joy in that city.But there was a man named Simon, who had previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the people of Samaria, saying that he himself was somebody great.

Steadfast love and faithfulness meet; righteousness and peace kiss each other. Faithfulness springs up from the ground, and righteousness looks down from the sky. Yes, the Lord will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase. Righteousness will go before him and make his footsteps a way. To the choirmaster. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. Lord, you were favorable to your land; you restored the fortunes of Jacob. You forgave the iniquity of your people; you covered all their sin. Selah You withdrew all your wrath; you turned from your hot anger. Restore us again, O God of our salvation, and put away your indignation toward us! Will you be angry with us forever? Will you prolong your anger to all generations? Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you? Show us your steadfast love, O Lord, and grant us your salvation. Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints; but let them not turn back to folly. Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him, that glory may dwell in our land.

Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, "It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty.But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word."And what they said pleased the whole gathering, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch.These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands on them.And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people.Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called), and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of those from Cilicia and Asia, rose up and disputed with Stephen.

When the young men came in they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things.Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon's Portico.None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem.And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women,so that they even carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them.The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed.But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and filled with jealousythey arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison.But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property,"Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life."And when they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach. He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing.After him Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the census and drew away some of the people after him. He too perished, and all who followed him were scattered.So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail;but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!" So they took his advice,But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land?and when they had called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name.And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus. While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God."When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it.The young men rose and wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him.After an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.And Peter said to her, "Tell me whether you sold the land for so much." And she said, "Yes, for so much."But Peter said to her, "How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out."

In the daytime he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a fiery light. He split rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep. They tested God in their heart by demanding the food they craved. They spoke against God, saying, "Can God spread a table in the wilderness? A Maskil of Asaph. I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old, But before they had satisfied their craving, while the food was still in their mouths, the anger of God rose against them, and he killed the strongest of them and laid low the young men of Israel. In spite of all this, they still sinned; despite his wonders, they did not believe. So he made their days vanish like a breath, and their years in terror. When he killed them, they sought him; they repented and sought God earnestly. They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their redeemer. But they flattered him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues. Their heart was not steadfast toward him; they were not faithful to his covenant. Yet he, being compassionate, atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them; he restrained his anger often and did not stir up all his wrath. He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that passes and comes not again. things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done. He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments; and that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God. The Ephraimites, armed with the bow, turned back on the day of battle.
