Now while Paul was waiting for them at aAthens, his spirit was being provoked within him as he was observing the city full of idols.So he was reasoning ain the synagogue with the Jews and bthe God-fearing Gentiles, and in the market place every day with those who happened to be present.And also some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers were conversing with him. Some were saying, "What would athis idle babbler wish to say?" Others, "He seems to be a proclaimer of strange deities,"--because he was preaching bJesus and the resurrection.And they atook him and brought him to the bAreopagus, saying, "May we know what cthis new teaching is which you are proclaiming?"For you are bringing some strange things to our ears; so we want to know what these things mean."(Now all the Athenians and the strangers avisiting there used to spend their time in nothing other than telling or hearing something new.)So Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, "Men of aAthens, I observe that you are very breligious in all respects."For while I was passing through and examining the aobjects of your worship, I also found an altar with this inscription, 'TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.' Therefore what byou worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you."aThe God who made the world and all things in it, since He is bLord of heaven and earth, does not cdwell in temples made with hands;nor is He served by human hands, aas though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things;and aHe made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having bdetermined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation,that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, athough He is not far from each one of us;for ain Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, 'For we also are His children.'"Being then the children of God, we aought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and thought of man."Therefore having aoverlooked bthe times of ignorance, God is cnow declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent,because He has fixed aa day in which bHe will judge cthe world in righteousness through a Man whom He has dappointed, having furnished proof to all men by eraising Him from the dead."

A Psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah. O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands. My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips, when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night; for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.

Again the Philistine said, "aI defy the ranks of Israel this day; give me a man that we may fight together."When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.Now David was athe son of the bEphrathite of Bethlehem in Judah, whose name was Jesse, and che had eight sons. And Jesse was old in the days of Saul, advanced in years among men.The three older sons of Jesse had gone after Saul to the battle. And athe names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and the second to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.aDavid was the youngest. Now the three oldest followed Saul,abut David went back and forth from Saul bto tend his father's flock at Bethlehem.The Philistine came forward morning and evening for forty days and took his stand.Then Jesse said to David his son, "aTake now for your brothers an ephah of this roasted grain and these ten loaves and run to the camp to your brothers."aBring also these ten cuts of cheese to the commander of their thousand, band look into the welfare of your brothers, and bring back news of them."For Saul and they and all the men of Israel are in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines."Now athe Philistines gathered their armies for battle; and they were gathered at Socoh which belongs to Judah, and they camped between bSocoh and cAzekah, in dEphes-dammim.So David arose early in the morning and left the flock with a keeper and took the supplies and went as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the acircle of the camp while the army was going out in battle array shouting the war cry.Israel and the Philistines drew up in battle array, army against army.Then David left his abaggage in the care of the baggage keeper, and ran to the battle line and entered in order to greet his brothers.As he was talking with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine from Gath named Goliath, was coming up from the army of the Philistines, and he spoke athese same words; and David heard them.When all the men of Israel saw the man, they fled from him and were greatly afraid.The men of Israel said, "Have you seen this man who is coming up? Surely he is coming up to defy Israel. And it will be that the king will enrich the man who kills him with great riches and awill give him his daughter and make his father's house free in Israel."Then David spoke to the men who were standing by him, saying, "What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away athe reproach from Israel? For who is this buncircumcised Philistine, that he should ctaunt the armies of dthe living God?"The people answered him in accord with this word, saying, "aThus it will be done for the man who kills him."Now Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and aEliab's anger burned against David and he said, "Why have you come down? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your insolence and the wickedness of your heart; for you have come down in order to see the battle."But David said, "What have I done now? Was it not just a question?"Saul and the men of Israel were gathered and camped in athe valley of Elah, and drew up in battle array to encounter the Philistines.Then he turned away from him to another and asaid the same thing; and the people answered the same thing as before.When the words which David spoke were heard, they told them to Saul, and he sent for him.David said to Saul, "aLet no man's heart fail on account of him; byour servant will go and fight with this Philistine."Then Saul said to David, "aYou are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are but a youth while he has been a warrior from his youth."But David said to Saul, "Your servant was tending his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and took a lamb from the flock,I went out after him and attacked him, and arescued it from his mouth; and when he rose up against me, I seized him by his beard and struck him and killed him."Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, since he has taunted the armies of the living God."And David said, "aThe Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." And Saul said to David, "bGo, and may the Lord be with you."Then Saul clothed David with his garments and put a bronze helmet on his head, and he clothed him with armor.David girded his sword over his armor and tried to walk, for he had not tested them. So David said to Saul, "I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them." And David took them off.The Philistines stood on the mountain on one side while Israel stood on the mountain on the other side, with the valley between them.He took his stick in his hand and chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in the shepherd's bag which he had, even in his pouch, and ahis sling was in his hand; and he approached the Philistine.Then the Philistine came on and approached David, with the shield-bearer in front of him.When the Philistine looked and saw David, ahe disdained him; for he was but a youth, and bruddy, with a handsome appearance.The Philistine said to David, "aAm I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?" And bthe Philistine cursed David by his gods.The Philistine also said to David, "Come to me, and I will give your flesh ato the birds of the sky and the beasts of the field."Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, abut I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have taunted."This day the Lord will deliver you up into my hands, and I will strike you down and remove your head from you. And I will give the adead bodies of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky and the wild beasts of the earth, bthat all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel,and that all this assembly may know that athe Lord does not deliver by sword or by spear; bfor the battle is the Lord'S and He will give you into our hands."Then it happened when the Philistine rose and came and drew near to meet David, that aDavid ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine.And David put his hand into his bag and took from it a stone and slung it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead. And the stone sank into his forehead, so that he fell on his face to the ground.Then a champion came out from the armies of the Philistines named aGoliath, from bGath, whose height was six cubits and a span.Thus David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and he struck the Philistine and killed him; but there was no sword in David's hand.Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and atook his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it. bWhen the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.The men of Israel and Judah arose and shouted and pursued the Philistines as far as the valley, and to the gates of aEkron. And the slain Philistines lay along the way to bShaaraim, even to Gath and Ekron.The sons of Israel returned from chasing the Philistines and plundered their camps.Then David took the Philistine's head and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his weapons in his tent.Now when Saul saw David going out against the Philistine, he said to Abner the commander of the army, "Abner, whose son is athis young man?" And Abner said, "By your life, O king, I do not know."The king said, "You inquire whose son the youth is."So when David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and abrought him before Saul with the Philistine's head in his hand.Saul said to him, "Whose son are you, young man?" And David answered, "aI am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite."He had a bronze helmet on his head, and he was clothed with scale-armor which weighed five thousand shekels of bronze.He also had bronze greaves on his legs and a abronze javelin slung between his shoulders.aThe shaft of his spear was like a weaver's beam, and the head of his spear weighed six hundred shekels of iron; bhis shield-carrier also walked before him.He stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel and said to them, "Why do you come out to draw up in battle array? Am I not the Philistine and you aservants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves and let him come down to me."aIf he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will become your servants; but if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall become our servants and serve us."

And immediately He entered the boat with His disciples and came to the district of aDalmanutha.aThe Pharisees came out and began to argue with Him, bseeking from Him a sign from heaven, to test Him.aSighing deeply in His spirit, He said, "Why does this generation seek for a sign? Truly I say to you, bno sign will be given to this generation."Leaving them, He again embarked and went away to the other side.And they had forgotten to take bread, and did not have more than one loaf in the boat with them.And He was giving orders to them, saying, "aWatch out! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of bHerod."They began to discuss with one another the fact that they had no bread.And Jesus, aware of this, said to them, "Why do you discuss the fact that you have no bread? aDo you not yet see or understand? And do you not remember,when I broke athe five loaves for the five thousand, how many bbaskets full of broken pieces you picked up?" They said to Him, "Twelve."In those days, when there was again a large crowd and they had nothing to eat, aJesus called His disciples and said to them,"When I broke athe seven for the four thousand, how many large bbaskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?" And they said to Him, "Seven."And He was saying to them, "aDo you not yet understand?"And they came to aBethsaida. And they brought a blind man to Jesus and implored Him to btouch him.Taking the blind man by the hand, He abrought him out of the village; and after aspitting on his eyes and blaying His hands on him, He asked him, "Do you see anything?"And he looked up and said, "I see men, for I see them like trees, walking around."Then again He laid His hands on his eyes; and he looked intently and was restored, and began to see everything clearly.And He sent him to his home, saying, "Do not even enter athe village."aJesus went out, along with His disciples, to the villages of bCaesarea Philippi; and on the way He questioned His disciples, saying to them, "Who do people say that I am?"aThey told Him, saying, "John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; but others, one of the prophets."And He continued by questioning them, "But who do you say that I am?" aPeter answered and said to Him, "You are the Christ.""aI feel compassion for the people because they have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat.And aHe warned them to tell no one about Him.aAnd He began to teach them that bthe Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.And He was stating the matter aplainly. And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him.But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind Me, aSatan; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's."And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and atake up his cross and follow Me."For awhoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it."For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?"For what will a man give in exchange for his soul?"For awhoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, bthe Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He ccomes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.""If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way; and some of them have come from a great distance."And His disciples answered Him, "Where will anyone be able to find enough bread here in this desolate place to satisfy these people?"And He was asking them, "How many loaves do you have?" And they said, "Seven."And He directed the people to sit down on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks and broke them, and started giving them to His disciples to serve to them, and they served them to the people.They also had a few small fish; and aafter He had blessed them, He ordered these to be served as well.And they ate and were satisfied; and they picked up seven large abaskets full of what was left over of the broken pieces.About four thousand were there; and He sent them away.

(Thus He declared aall foods bclean.)aThe Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered around Him when they had come bfrom Jerusalem,And He was saying, "aThat which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man."For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries,deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, aenvy, slander, pride and foolishness."All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man."aJesus got up and went away from there to the region of bTyre. And others were saying, "He is ba prophet, like one of the prophets of old."But when Herod heard of it, he kept saying, "John, whom I beheaded, has risen!"For Herod himself had sent and had John arrested and bound in prison on account of aHerodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her.For John had been saying to Herod, "aIt is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."aHerodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death and could not do so;aJesus went out from there and came into bHis hometown; and His disciples followed Him.for aHerod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was very perplexed; but he used to enjoy listening to him.A strategic day came when Herod on his birthday agave a banquet for his lords and military commanders and the leading men bof Galilee;and when the daughter of aHerodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests; and the king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you."And he swore to her, "Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you; up to ahalf of my kingdom."And she went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" And she said, "The head of John the Baptist."Immediately she came in a hurry to the king and asked, saying, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter."And although the king was very sorry, yet because of his oaths and because of his dinner guests, he was unwilling to refuse her.Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded him to bring back his head. And he went and had him beheaded in the prison,and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother.When his disciples heard about this, they came and took away his body and laid it in a tomb.When the Sabbath came, He began ato teach in the synagogue; and the bmany listeners were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to Him, and such miracles as these performed by His hands?aThe bapostles gathered together with Jesus; and they reported to Him all that they had done and taught.And He said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while." (For there were many people coming and going, and athey did not even have time to eat.)aThey went away in bthe boat to a secluded place by themselves.The people saw them going, and many recognized them and ran there together on foot from all the cities, and got there ahead of them.When Jesus went ashore, He asaw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because bthey were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things.When it was already quite late, His disciples came to Him and said, "This place is desolate and it is already quite late;send them away so that they may go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat."But He answered them, "You give them something to eat!" aAnd they said to Him, "Shall we go and spend two hundred bdenarii on bread and give them something to eat?"And He said to them, "How many loaves do you have? Go look!" And when they found out, they said, "Five, and two fish."And He commanded them all to sit down by groups on the green grass."Is not this athe carpenter, bthe son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not cHis sisters here with us?" And they took doffense at Him.They sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties.And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He ablessed the food and broke the loaves and He kept giving them to the disciples to set before them; and He divided up the two fish among them all.They all ate and were satisfied,and they picked up twelve full abaskets of the broken pieces, and also of the fish.There were afive thousand men who ate the loaves.aImmediately Jesus made His disciples get into bthe boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to cBethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowd away.After abidding them farewell, He left bfor the mountain to pray.When it was evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land.Seeing them straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, at about the afourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea; and He intended to pass by them.But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out;Jesus said to them, "aA prophet is not without honor except in bhis hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household."for they all saw Him and were terrified. But immediately He spoke with them and said to them, "aTake courage; it is I, bdo not be afraid."Then He got into athe boat with them, and the wind stopped; and they were utterly astonished,for athey had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves, but their heart bwas hardened.aWhen they had crossed over they came to land at Gennesaret, and moored to the shore.When they got out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him,and ran about that whole country and began to carry here and there on their pallets those who were sick, to the place they heard He was.Wherever He entered villages, or cities, or countryside, they were laying the sick in the market places, and imploring Him that they might just atouch bthe fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were being cured.And He could do no miracle there except that He alaid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.And He wondered at their unbelief.aAnd bHe summoned the twelve and began to send them out cin pairs, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits;aand He instructed them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a mere staff--no bread, no bag, no money in their belt--but to wear sandals; and He added, "Do not put on two tunics."

And he began to implore Him earnestly not to send them out of the country.Now there was a large herd of swine feeding nearby on the mountain.The demons implored Him, saying, "Send us into the swine so that we may enter them."Jesus gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they were drowned in the sea.Their herdsmen ran away and reported it in the city and in the country. And the people came to see what it was that had happened.They came to Jesus and observed the man who had been ademon-possessed sitting down, bclothed and cin his right mind, the very man who had had the "dlegion"; and they became frightened.Those who had seen it described to them how it had happened to the ademon-possessed man, and all about the swine.And they began to aimplore Him to leave their region.aAs He was getting into the boat, the man who had been bdemon-possessed was imploring Him that he might accompany Him.And He did not let him, but He said to him, "aGo home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you."aThey came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gerasenes.And he went away and began to aproclaim in bDecapolis what great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed.aWhen Jesus had crossed over again in bthe boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and so He stayed cby the seashore.aOne of bthe synagogue officials named Jairus came up, and on seeing Him, fell at His feetand implored Him earnestly, saying, "My little daughter is at the point of death; please come and alay Your hands on her, so that she will get well and live."And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him.A woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years,and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse--after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak.For she thought, "If I just touch His garments, I will get well."Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her aaffliction.When He got out of athe boat, immediately a man from the tombs bwith an unclean spirit met Him,Immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that athe power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched My garments?"And His disciples said to Him, "You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, 'Who touched Me?'"And He looked around to see the woman who had done this.But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.And He said to her, "Daughter, ayour faith has made you well; bgo in peace and be healed of your caffliction."While He was still speaking, they came from the house of the asynagogue official, saying, "Your daughter has died; why trouble the Teacher anymore?"But Jesus, overhearing what was being spoken, said to the asynagogue official, "bDo not be afraid any longer, only believe."And He allowed no one to accompany Him, except aPeter and James and John the brother of James.They came to the house of the asynagogue official; and He saw a commotion, and people loudly weeping and wailing.And entering in, He said to them, "Why make a commotion and weep? The child has not died, but is asleep."and he had his dwelling among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him anymore, even with a chain;They began laughing at Him. But putting them all out, He took along the child's father and mother and His own companions, and entered the room where the child was.Taking the child by the hand, He said to her, "Talitha kum!" (which translated means, "Little girl, aI say to you, get up!").Immediately the girl got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded.And He agave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and He said that something should be given her to eat.because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles broken in pieces, and no one was strong enough to subdue him.Constantly, night and day, he was screaming among the tombs and in the mountains, and gashing himself with stones.Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him;and shouting with a loud voice, he said, "aWhat business do we have with each other, Jesus, bSon of cthe Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!"For He had been saying to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!"And He was asking him, "What is your name?" And he said to Him, "My name is aLegion; for we are many."

As soon as He was alone, His followers, along with the twelve, began asking Him about the parables.And He was saying to them, "To you has been given the mystery of the kingdom of God, but athose who are outside get everything bin parables,so that aWHILE SEEING, THEY MAY SEE AND NOT PERCEIVE, AND WHILE HEARING, THEY MAY HEAR AND NOT UNDERSTAND, OTHERWISE THEY MIGHT RETURN AND BE FORGIVEN."aAnd He said to them, "Do you not understand this parable? How will you understand all the parables?"The sower sows the word."These are the ones who are beside the road where the word is sown; and when they hear, immediately aSatan comes and takes away the word which has been sown in them."In a similar way these are the ones on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy;and they have no firm root in themselves, but are only temporary; then, when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately they fall away."And others are the ones on whom seed was sown among the thorns; these are the ones who have heard the word,but the worries of athe world, and the bdeceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.aHe began to teach again bby the sea. And such a very large crowd gathered to Him that cHe got into a boat in the sea and sat down; and the whole crowd was by the sea on the land."And those are the ones on whom seed was sown on the good soil; and they hear the word and accept it and abear fruit, thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold."And He was saying to them, "aA lamp is not brought to be put under a basket, is it, or under a bed? Is it not brought to be put on the lampstand?"aFor nothing is hidden, except to be revealed; nor has anything been secret, but that it would come to light."aIf anyone has ears to hear, let him hear."And He was saying to them, "Take care what you listen to. aBy your standard of measure it will be measured to you; and more will be given you besides."aFor whoever has, to him more shall be given; and whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him."And He was saying, "The kingdom of God is like a man who casts seed upon the soil;and he goes to bed at night and gets up by day, and the seed sprouts and grows--how, he himself does not know."The soil produces crops by itself; first the blade, then the head, then the mature grain in the head."But when the crop permits, he immediately aputs in the sickle, because the harvest has come."And He was teaching them many things in aparables, and was saying to them in His teaching,aAnd He said, "How shall we bpicture the kingdom of God, or by what parable shall we present it?"It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the soil, though it is smaller than all the seeds that are upon the soil,yet when it is sown, it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and forms large branches; so that aTHE BIRDS OF THE AIR can NEST UNDER ITS SHADE."With many such parables He was speaking the word to them, so far as they were able to hear it;and He did not speak to them awithout a parable; but He was bexplaining everything privately to His own disciples.aOn that day, when evening came, He said to them, "Let us go over to the other side."Leaving the crowd, they took Him along with them ain the boat, just as He was; and other boats were with Him.And there arose a fierce gale of wind, and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was already filling up.Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?"And He got up and arebuked the wind and said to the sea, "Hush, be still." And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm."Listen to this! Behold, the sower went out to sow;And He said to them, "Why are you afraid? aDo you still have no faith?"They became very much afraid and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?"as he was sowing, some seed fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate it up."Other seed fell on the rocky ground where it did not have much soil; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of soil."And after the sun had risen, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away."Other seed fell among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked it, and it yielded no crop."Other seeds fell into the good soil, and as they grew up and increased, they yielded a crop and produced thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold."And He was saying, "aHe who has ears to hear, let him hear."

for He had ahealed many, with the result that all those who had bafflictions pressed around Him in order to ctouch Him.Whenever the unclean spirits saw Him, they would fall down before Him and shout, "You are athe Son of God!"And He aearnestly warned them not to tell who He was.And He went up on athe mountain and bsummoned those whom He Himself wanted, and they came to Him.And He appointed twelve, so that they would be with Him and that He could send them out to preach,and to have authority to cast out the demons.And He appointed the twelve: aSimon (to whom He gave the name Peter),and James, the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James (to them He gave the name Boanerges, which means, "Sons of Thunder");and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot;and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Him.aHe bentered again into a synagogue; and a man was there whose hand was withered.And He came ahome, and the bcrowd gathered again, cto such an extent that they could not even eat a meal.When aHis own people heard of this, they went out to take custody of Him; for they were saying, "bHe has lost His senses."The scribes who came down afrom Jerusalem were saying, "He is possessed by bBeelzebul," and "cHe casts out the demons by the ruler of the demons."aAnd He called them to Himself and began speaking to them in bparables, "How can cSatan cast out Satan?"If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand."If a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand."If aSatan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but he is finished!"aBut no one can enter the strong man's house and plunder his property unless he first binds the strong man, and then he will plunder his house."aTruly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter;but awhoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin"--aThey were watching Him to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath, bso that they might accuse Him.because they were saying, "He has an unclean spirit."aThen His mother and His brothers arrived, and standing outside they sent word to Him and called Him.A crowd was sitting around Him, and they said to Him, "Behold, Your mother and Your brothers are outside looking for You."Answering them, He said, "Who are My mother and My brothers?"Looking about at those who were sitting around Him, He said, "aBehold My mother and My brothers!"For whoever adoes the will of God, he is My brother and sister and mother."He said to the man with the withered hand, "Get up and come forward!"And He said to them, "Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to kill?" And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored.The Pharisees went out and immediately began conspiring with the aHerodians against Him, as to how they might destroy Him.aJesus withdrew to the sea with His disciples; and ba great multitude from Galilee followed; and also from Judea,and from Jerusalem, and from aIdumea, and beyond the Jordan, and the vicinity of bTyre and Sidon, a great number of people heard of all that He was doing and came to Him.aAnd He told His disciples that a boat should stand ready for Him because of the crowd, so that they would not crowd Him;

"But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"--He said to the paralytic,"I say to you, get up, pick up your pallet and go home."And he got up and immediately picked up the pallet and went out in the sight of everyone, so that they were all amazed and awere glorifying God, saying, "bWe have never seen anything like this."And He went out again by the seashore; and aall the people were coming to Him, and He was teaching them.aAs He passed by, He saw bLevi the son of Alphaeus sitting in the tax booth, and He said to him, "cFollow Me!" And he got up and followed Him.And it happened that He was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were dining with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following Him.When athe scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they said to His disciples, "bWhy is He eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners?"And hearing this, Jesus said to them, "aIt is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners."aJohn's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and they came and said to Him, "Why do John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?"And Jesus said to them, "While the bridegroom is with them, the attendants of the bridegroom cannot fast, can they? So long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.When He had come back to Capernaum several days afterward, it was heard that He was at home."But the adays will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day."No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear results."No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins as well; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins."aAnd it happened that He was passing through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples began to make their way along while bpicking the heads of grain.The Pharisees were saying to Him, "Look, awhy are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?"And He said to them, "Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions became hungry;how he entered the house of God in the time of aAbiathar the high priest, and ate the consecrated bread, which bis not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests, and he also gave it to those who were with him?"Jesus said to them, "aThe Sabbath was made for man, and bnot man for the Sabbath."So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."And amany were gathered together, so that there was no longer room, not even near the door; and He was speaking the word to them.aAnd they came, bringing to Him a bparalytic, carried by four men.Being unable to get to Him because of the crowd, they aremoved the roof above Him; and when they had dug an opening, they let down the pallet on which the bparalytic was lying.And Jesus seeing their faith said to the paralytic, "Son, ayour sins are forgiven."But some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts,"Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; awho can forgive sins but God alone?"Immediately Jesus, aware in His spirit that they were reasoning that way within themselves, said to them, "Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts?"Which is easier, to say to the aparalytic, 'Your sins are forgiven'; or to say, 'Get up, and pick up your pallet and walk'?
