And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.

"Those days" are spelled out in more detail in Revelation 13. "Those days" are shortened by the second coming of Jesus and the gathering of the elect, which coincides with God beginning to pour out his wrath (see the trumpet judgements and the bowl judgements in Revelation).
