And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

The answer to "whence came they" in the previous verse is that they "came out of great tribulation," contrary to the pre-tribulation rapture doctrine. It's also the last time the word tribulation is used in the Bible when, clearly, there's still much wrath yet to come.
