Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.

Obviously, there are things to watch for or he wouldn't tell us to watch. For instance, there's the abomination of desolation and shortly thereafter the sun and moon being darkened that will happen before "the day of the Lord." See also Mark 13:37.
